Reconciliation Training

Reconciliation requires understanding where we have been, who we are now, and where we are going.

What We Do – Reconciliation Training

Reconciliation training builds understanding and accountability across all levels of leadership. It helps organisations move beyond awareness into meaningful, informed action.

At Buneen Consulting, we focus on training that is practical, relevant and grounded in truth. Our sessions are designed for executives and senior leaders who want to understand how Australia’s shared history shapes the systems we work in today, and how that knowledge can be used to build stronger, more inclusive workplaces.

This training brings together truth-telling, reflection and forward planning. It connects the past to the present and focuses on what must happen next.

Understanding the past matters. Acting for the future matters more

The Four Types of Reconciliation Training

Over time, reconciliation training in Australia has evolved to include four key types of learning. Each has its place, and together they form a complete picture of understanding.

1. Australian History

Covers the story of this land before 1788 through to the early 2000s. Participants learn about colonisation, the protection and assimilation policies of the 1800s and 1900s, and the social and economic impacts of those systems on First Peoples. This training builds historical understanding and context for reconciliation today.

2. Personal History and Reflection

Centres on story. Participants are invited to hear lived experiences, reflect on their own values and recognise how personal and collective histories shape identity and relationships in the workplace.

3. On Country Learning

Delivered with Traditional Owners and local Aboriginal organisations. On Country training helps participants connect with local culture, Country and knowledge in a practical, experiential way.

4. Contemporary Reconciliation (Our Focus)

Buneen’s training focuses on contemporary reconciliation — the story of the past 20 years and the direction we are heading. Participants examine major policies and frameworks such as Closing the Gap, the Uluru Statement from the Heart and truth-telling and treaty initiatives.

We explore what has changed, what still needs to change and the role leaders play in creating the next chapter of reconciliation. This approach links historical understanding with real-world leadership and systems reform. It gives executives the tools to turn reconciliation from a statement into measurable action.

Approach to Reconciliation

Training

At Buneen, our approach to reconciliation training is grounded in truth, evidence and lived experience. We believe learning must connect history to action and provide clear pathways for leadership.

We design training that is practical, culturally grounded and built around real conversations. Our facilitators create safe and brave spaces where leaders can reflect, ask questions and explore how reconciliation connects to governance, systems and decision-making.

We use the SAFE + BRAVE framework to guide this work. SAFE focuses on building trust, respect and shared understanding. BRAVE calls participants into accountability, action and transformation. Together, they help leaders move from learning about history to leading with purpose.

Why We Focus on Contemporary Reconciliation

While historical, personal and On Country learning remain essential, our focus is on Contemporary Reconciliation because it prepares leaders for what comes next.

Understanding the past is critical, but organisations also need to understand how policies, movements and expectations have evolved over the past two decades. From Closing the Gap and Reconciliation Action Plans to truth-telling, treaty and self-determination, today’s reconciliation landscape is complex and fast-changing.

Our training gives executives and senior leaders the context and tools to:

  • Understand how these national frameworks connect to their organisation’s work.

  • Translate reconciliation commitments into measurable outcomes.

  • Strengthen engagement with Aboriginal partners, stakeholders and communities.

  • Lead change that is culturally strong, strategic and accountable.

We focus on contemporary reconciliation because it is future-focused, actionable and directly relevant to leadership today. It positions organisations to move beyond good intentions and play a real role in building a fairer, stronger Australia.
